Co-Founders

Lisa Young

Dr. Lisa Young (1994-present) and Sue Johnson (1994-2007) co-founded Coco’s Lunch in 1994 with a desire to create original music and explore vocal expression in new ways for a female vocal quintet lineup.

Sue Johnson

Their training in improvisation and a variety of aural traditions influenced the rhythmic and harmonic complexity heard in the compositions that are now featured in 7 acclaimed albums.

Both being leaders in vocal workshops and improvisation, they looked for other skilled women musicians and sought to create a unique voice in contemporary vocal music.

The birth of Coco’s Lunch followed Sue and Lisa’s numerous performance-based collaborations in duet, trio and quintet ensembles and also commissions for massed voices.
